Year of Hemp

2010 World Tour

Save the planet - sow a seed.

Support for legalizing marijuana grows rapidly around U.S.

Approval for medical use expands alongside criticism of prohibition.

November 23, 2009 Washington Post Article

Hemp History

  • c. 3,700 B.C Emperor Chen Nung (Shen Nung), classifies hemp as one of the “Superior Elixirs of Immortality”.
  • Li Shi Chen (1573-1620) compiled the most extensive Chinese Materia Medica, called Pen T'sao Kang Mu which states about hemp: "The Ancients used this medicine to remain fertile, strong and vigorous . . ." and hemp seed will "aid in the growth of the body’s muscle fiber…"
  • Quoting books even older, the Pen Tsao proclaims that whole hemp seed is useful "to mend and help all of the central areas and benefit the Chi [life force]."
  • In Chinese medicine, hemp seeds fall under the categories of sweet, neutral, and clearing heat, operating through the channels of the stomach, large intestine, and the spleen and remain widely used today as one of the 50 "fundamental" herbs in traditional Chinese medicine.

  • The medicinal potential of marijuana is well documented in North America also--in 1860, for example, the convection of the Committee on Cannabis Indica of the Ohio State Medical Society reported on cannabis' therapeutic applications in treating a vast number of ailments, including: mania, whooping cough, asthma, chronic bronchitis, tetanus, epilepsy and withdrawal from alcohol.
  • Between the years of 1840 and 1860, more than 100 articles were published in the medical community recommending it for various disorders.

Although the extent of the medicinal value of cannabis is debated by some, well-documented beneficial effects have been published over thousands  of years.  Among these are: the amelioration of nausea and vomiting, stimulation of hunger, (in particular in chemotherapy/ AIDS patients), lowered intraocular eye pressure (shown to be effective for treating glaucoma), as well as general analgesic effects (pain reliever), and the list goes on.

Highly obscured, (until the interent), yet even more remarkable, is mounting evidence showing that cannabis may CURE a variety of conditions including cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and depression.

On October 7, 2003 a patent entitled "Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants" (Patent No. #6,630,507) was awarded to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, based on research done at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).  This patent claims that cannabinoids are "useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases."  It states that this 'new found' property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of ailments.  "The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia."  Synthetic cannabinoids are marketed as Marinol in the United States and Germany, and Cesamet in Canada.

On 19 October 2009 the US Deputy Attorney General issued a US Department of Justice memorandum to "All United States Attorneys" providing clear clarification and guidance to federal prosecutors in US States that have enacted laws authorizing the medical use of marijuana and recommending against prosecuting patients using medical cannabis products according to state laws.  Click [here] for the FULL history of hemp.

Marijuana's Active Ingredient Shown to Inhibit Primary Marker of Alzheimer's Disease

http://www.scripps.edu/news/press/080906.html

Research done by the Scripps Research Institute in California and published August 9 in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics shows that THC, prevents the formation of deposits in the brain associated with Alzheimer's disease.

THC was found to prevent an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase from accelerating the formation of "Alzheimer plaques" in the brain more effectively than commercially marketed drugs. THC is also more effective at blocking clumps of protein that can inhibit memory and cognition in Alzheimer’s patients, as reported in Molecular Pharmaceutics.

In lab and mouse studies, the compound known as THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) cut lung tumor growth in half and helped prevent the cancer from spreading, said Anju Peet, a Harvard University researcher in Boston who tested the chemical.

http://www.bio-medicine.org/medicine-news/Marijuana-Helps-to-Combat-Lung-Cancer-20045-1/

THC has been found to reduce tumor growth in common lung cancer by 50 percent and to significantly reduce the ability of the cancer to spread, say researchers at Harvard University, who tested the chemical in both lab and mouse studies.  The researchers suggest that THC might be used in a targeted fashion to treat lung cancer.

In 2006, Donald Tashkin, of the University of California in Los Angeles, presented the results of his study, Marijuana Use and Lung Cancer: Results of a Case-Control Study.  Tashkin found that smoking marijuana does not appear to increase the risk of lung cancer or head-and-neck malignancies, even among heavy users.  The more tobacco a person smoked, the greater their risk of developing lung cancer and other cancers of the head and neck.  But people who smoked more marijuana were not at increased risk compared with people who smoked less and people who didn’t smoke at all.  Marijuana use was associated with cancer risk ratios below 1.0, indicating that a history of marijuana smoking had no effect on the risk for respiratory cancers.  In contrast, tobacco smoking had a 21-fold risk for cancer. Tashkin concluded, "It's possible that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana smoke may encourage apoptosis, or programmed cell death, causing cells to die off before they have a chance to undergo malignant transformation".

Wan Tan presented a study at the American Thoracic Society 2007 International Conference showing that smoking marijuana and tobacco together more than tripled the risk of developing Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) over just smoking tobacco alone.

Similar findings were released in April 2009 by the Vancouver Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease Research Group.  The study presents that smoking both tobacco and marijuana synergistically increased the risk of respiratory symptoms and COPD. Smoking only marijuana, however, was not associated with an increased risk of respiratory symptoms of COPD.   In a related commentary, Tashkin writes, "…we can be close to concluding that marijuana smoking by itself does not lead to COPD".

UPDATE - July 17, 2010

Class-action Human Rights Tribunal applications are being filed in Ontario by citizens deprived wrongfully of their right to safe and effective cannabis for medicinal purposes because of our defective / ineffective Medicinal Marijuana Access Regulations (MMAR) regime.  If you have been refused access to cannabis by your doctor, can not find a family doctor, or have suffered, and been deprived of medicinal cannabis despite a legitimate ailment or condition, you should complete the form below, join the FaceBook Group "Thyme For Hemp" or visit http://treekings.tk to find out more about this movement.

Depriving citizens of a safe, non-toxic and inexpensive natural alternative to costly toxic chemicals and drugs is depraved, abhorrent, and contrary to the rule of law.  In fact this situation offends the principles of fundamental justice - as has been ruled time and time again by our Canadian courts - whether Mr. Harper et al. like it, or not.

The research is in, and people are waking up angry.  Take part in this movement and fight for our rights to free, safe and effective cannabis medicine.  The FaceBook Group "Thyme For Hemp" already has nearly 2,000 members, grows daily.

Its time to stop the reefer madness, and look at this plant from a factual and scientific perspective.  Doctors are now prescribing cannabis to children for ADD/ADHD because it is effective, non-addictive and non-toxic - unlike so-called 'traditional' chemical cocktails such as Ritalin.

Canada's first International Medical Marijuana Expo in Toronto hopes to attract people suffering from health problems who are "sick and tired of taking pharmaceutical drugs that have adverse side-effects," says the event's organizer. Congratulations to Marco and his associates and supporters for this important and historic event. Cannabis cures cancer, kills pain that morphine won't and is simply the healthiest, most nutritious, and most useful plant known to humans. This has been the case for thousands of years, but only in the last 60 or so has it been wrongfully vilified by selfish corporate interests.

I personally have used cannabis medicinally in order to recover from toxic poisoning [see:
IngersollMouldFoundation], and to regain my weight lost due to the ordeal. My father also now uses it after radiation and chemotherapy nearly killed him.

Kudos again to the organizers and supporters of this movement.  Help us to spread the word: Save the planet - Sow a seed.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rick Simpson - 2009 "Freedom Fighter of the Year"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Grassroots hemp movement swells behind Canadian, Rick Simpson

 December 6th, 2009 - Ingersoll, Ontario

One of humanity’s most celebrated medicinal hemp advocates has been made a political refugee by the RCMP, while he and his supporters gathered in Europe where he accepted the 2009 “Freedom Fighter of the Year” award, inflaming (and uniting) medicinal hemp supporters globally, who are rising to stand against medicinal hemp prohibition.

Who is Rick Simpson?

Since releasing “Run From the Cure: The Rick Simpson Story” Rick Simpson’s medicinal hemp videos have been viewed millions of times by people from around the world who remain captivated by this down-to-earth, all-Canadian folk hero from Nova Scotia who claims to cure / control cancer, diabetes, eczema, burns, scars, glaucoma, skin conditions, infections, chronic pain, ulcers, warts, moles, migraines, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, and insomnia, as well as regulate weight, and rejuvenate vital organs—all with a non-toxic herbal extract  made from medicinal hemp.

Quoting research from The Seth Group, (who’s famous video depicting the 20 hour time-lapse microscopic killing of cancerous cells with hemp extract in human brain tissue has been extensively viewed and shared on you-tube) among others, Rick Simpson claims that this oil, which is rich in THC, simply prevents harmful cell mutations in not only himself, but in virtually everybody who he has ever made contact with.  Although this claim is supported by mounting data and studies, and although medicinal hemp is undisputedly both non-toxic and non-lethal at any dosage level, Canada’s hemp prohibition laws prevent Rick Simpson from healing his sick followers lawfully.

After openly and candidly healing the sick (free of charge), with hemp oil, Rick Simpson now faces criminal charges of an undisclosed nature, according to Tim Hunter of the Amherst, Nova Scotia RCMP detachment.

“If I return home, I will be arrested and put in jail without bail or medicine.” says Simpson in an e-mail sent to his friends this week.

It seems the goal is to keep me from returning home and they succeeded.  But to what end?  All hemp magazines on this planet are now telling their readers how to heal themselves with this wonderful medicine.  If governments want to live in denial, it will be short-lived.  We are gaining tens of thousands of followers every day. You cannot stop the truth.”

Rick West, owner of Highly Recommended Plus, Ontario’s largest licensed medicinal hemp grower is no stranger to what he describes as the state’s intimidation tactics against often terminally-ill medicinal hemp users.  His commercial greenhouses were also recently raided in Norfolk County, Ontario.  Although charges have yet to be laid, West describes a culture of intimidation and opposition.

According to West, his clients have been “fired” by their family doctor merely for asking about hemp medicine.  In extremely rare circumstances where his clients are actually indeed able to have hemp prescribed, he describes examples of federal bureaucrats having harassed family doctors with telephone calls and official-looking correspondence questioning everything from dosages to diagnosis and treatment decisions.

West is one of approximately 3,000 people in Canada licensed by Health Canada to grow medicinal hemp. They supply nearly 5,000 sick people who are authorized to possess “dried marijuana” pursuant to an increasingly back-logged and dysfunctional federal scheme where the topical hemp oil produced by Rick Simpson is strictly forbidden.  This year’s raid was that last straw for West.  Now he and a host of others are in the midst of a class-action application seeking judicial intervention in order to access to medical hemp where they plan to seek exceptions from marijuana prohibition and prosecution for medicinal purposes.  The souring of doctor-patient relationships, and unequal access to medicine will be addressed in the action by those who feel increasingly deprived of life-saving treatment.

Jason Bowman, West’s spokesperson, and founder of a Canadian hemp-awareness movement called “Thyme for Hemp” supports Rick Simpson and agrees with his short-lived prohibition prediction.  He has recently formed a facebook group and launched websites dedicated to awareness and reform and is coordinating the class-action.

Bowman points to [R. v. Malmo-Levine; R. v. Caine, 2003 SCC 74, [2003] 3 S.C.R. 571] where the Supreme Court states that: “Canadian society is changing.  Its knowledge base is growing, and its morals are evolving.  Even if it was once the case, and in my view it never was, the prohibition against cannabis is no longer defensible.  My analysis leads me to conclude that the little harm caused by marihuana casts doubt on the appropriateness of state intervention in this case.  When I weigh the prohibition against, first, other available methods for countering the harm that marihuana use presents and, second, the problems caused by marihuana use, I must conclude that the legislation is inconsistent with the constitutional guarantee in s. 7 of the Charter.”

However, he also points to Hitzig v. Canada, 2003 CanLII 30796 (ON C.A.), (2003), 171 C.C.C. (3d) 18] where the Ontario Court of Appeal (when re-enacting the criminal prohibition of hemp) pointed out that: the federal medicinal access scheme set out in the regulations was “not a constitutionally acceptable medical exemption to the criminal prohibition against possession of marihuana.”   He says “the  court concluded that the scheme, as drafted by the Government, does not create a constitutionally acceptable medical exemption for patients with medical conditions for which marijuana has been prescribed.  The court, however, fell short on declaring the prohibition of marihuana unconstitutional, striking alternatively, only five specific sections of the MMAR, thereby rendering constitutional, the medical exemption as described in the remaining provisions of the MMAR, and thereby rendering the possession prohibition in s. 4 of the CDSA constitutional.”

The key is that while at that time the court held that interests of justice are best served by removing any uncertainty as to the constitutionality of the possession prohibition while at the same time providing for a constitutionally acceptable medical exemption, the court also clearly pointed out that if future physician co-operation drops to the point that the state’s medical exemption scheme becomes ineffective, this conclusion might have to be revisited.

According to Simpson, West, Bowman and their hosts of growing supporters, that time has now come.
