Year of Hemp

2010 World Tour

Save the planet - sow a seed.

Support for legalizing marijuana grows rapidly around U.S.

Approval for medical use expands alongside criticism of prohibition.

November 23, 2009 Washington Post Article

Hemp History

  • c. 3,700 B.C Emperor Chen Nung (Shen Nung), classifies hemp as one of the “Superior Elixirs of Immortality”.
  • Li Shi Chen (1573-1620) compiled the most extensive Chinese Materia Medica, called Pen T'sao Kang Mu which states about hemp: "The Ancients used this medicine to remain fertile, strong and vigorous . . ." and hemp seed will "aid in the growth of the body’s muscle fiber…"
  • Quoting books even older, the Pen Tsao proclaims that whole hemp seed is useful "to mend and help all of the central areas and benefit the Chi [life force]."
  • In Chinese medicine, hemp seeds fall under the categories of sweet, neutral, and clearing heat, operating through the channels of the stomach, large intestine, and the spleen and remain widely used today as one of the 50 "fundamental" herbs in traditional Chinese medicine.

  • The medicinal potential of marijuana is well documented in North America also--in 1860, for example, the convection of the Committee on Cannabis Indica of the Ohio State Medical Society reported on cannabis' therapeutic applications in treating a vast number of ailments, including: mania, whooping cough, asthma, chronic bronchitis, tetanus, epilepsy and withdrawal from alcohol.
  • Between the years of 1840 and 1860, more than 100 articles were published in the medical community recommending it for various disorders.

Although the extent of the medicinal value of cannabis is debated by some, well-documented beneficial effects have been published over thousands  of years.  Among these are: the amelioration of nausea and vomiting, stimulation of hunger, (in particular in chemotherapy/ AIDS patients), lowered intraocular eye pressure (shown to be effective for treating glaucoma), as well as general analgesic effects (pain reliever), and the list goes on.

Highly obscured, (until the interent), yet even more remarkable, is mounting evidence showing that cannabis may CURE a variety of conditions including cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and depression.

On October 7, 2003 a patent entitled "Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants" (Patent No. #6,630,507) was awarded to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, based on research done at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).  This patent claims that cannabinoids are "useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases."  It states that this 'new found' property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of ailments.  "The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia."  Synthetic cannabinoids are marketed as Marinol in the United States and Germany, and Cesamet in Canada.

On 19 October 2009 the US Deputy Attorney General issued a US Department of Justice memorandum to "All United States Attorneys" providing clear clarification and guidance to federal prosecutors in US States that have enacted laws authorizing the medical use of marijuana and recommending against prosecuting patients using medical cannabis products according to state laws.  Click [here] for the FULL history of hemp.

Marijuana's Active Ingredient Shown to Inhibit Primary Marker of Alzheimer's Disease

http://www.scripps.edu/news/press/080906.html

Research done by the Scripps Research Institute in California and published August 9 in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics shows that THC, prevents the formation of deposits in the brain associated with Alzheimer's disease.

THC was found to prevent an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase from accelerating the formation of "Alzheimer plaques" in the brain more effectively than commercially marketed drugs. THC is also more effective at blocking clumps of protein that can inhibit memory and cognition in Alzheimer’s patients, as reported in Molecular Pharmaceutics.

In lab and mouse studies, the compound known as THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) cut lung tumor growth in half and helped prevent the cancer from spreading, said Anju Peet, a Harvard University researcher in Boston who tested the chemical.

http://www.bio-medicine.org/medicine-news/Marijuana-Helps-to-Combat-Lung-Cancer-20045-1/

THC has been found to reduce tumor growth in common lung cancer by 50 percent and to significantly reduce the ability of the cancer to spread, say researchers at Harvard University, who tested the chemical in both lab and mouse studies.  The researchers suggest that THC might be used in a targeted fashion to treat lung cancer.

In 2006, Donald Tashkin, of the University of California in Los Angeles, presented the results of his study, Marijuana Use and Lung Cancer: Results of a Case-Control Study.  Tashkin found that smoking marijuana does not appear to increase the risk of lung cancer or head-and-neck malignancies, even among heavy users.  The more tobacco a person smoked, the greater their risk of developing lung cancer and other cancers of the head and neck.  But people who smoked more marijuana were not at increased risk compared with people who smoked less and people who didn’t smoke at all.  Marijuana use was associated with cancer risk ratios below 1.0, indicating that a history of marijuana smoking had no effect on the risk for respiratory cancers.  In contrast, tobacco smoking had a 21-fold risk for cancer. Tashkin concluded, "It's possible that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana smoke may encourage apoptosis, or programmed cell death, causing cells to die off before they have a chance to undergo malignant transformation".

Wan Tan presented a study at the American Thoracic Society 2007 International Conference showing that smoking marijuana and tobacco together more than tripled the risk of developing Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) over just smoking tobacco alone.

Similar findings were released in April 2009 by the Vancouver Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease Research Group.  The study presents that smoking both tobacco and marijuana synergistically increased the risk of respiratory symptoms and COPD. Smoking only marijuana, however, was not associated with an increased risk of respiratory symptoms of COPD.   In a related commentary, Tashkin writes, "…we can be close to concluding that marijuana smoking by itself does not lead to COPD".

INTERNET ABUZZ

Facebook, Twitter, buzzing as angry public clicks to  learn about hemp...and lies they've been told.

Right now, ever-increasing thousands of folks around the world are clicking to learn about hemp and its health, nutritional, and disease-fighting properties--and how to get access to it.

Despite virtual media silence on the issue, hemp is now world news because of the Simpson raid for curing cancers in Canada.

All politics and nonsense aside, we'd like to do our part by helping people to first learn about this plant. For this reason, and in response to countless requests from the likes of Steven Baldwin, Yoko Ono, doctors, nutritionists, chefs, students, patients, parents and those that are merely curious, we've started a ONE-STOP source for links to information, resources, stories, videos, etc. that tell the truth about hemp. You can see it here:

Collections such as this can save dozens of research hours, and help to inspire new ideas. This is how we become stronger.

Stories such as this, for example only have 200 hits as of today...

Let's tell as many people who know care so that this changes to 1,000,000+ (which is what is should be if things will ever meaningfully change, or even just in order that more research / attention is focused on hemp.

200 views is EXACTLY why nothing that happened for so many years. The truth is simply not being told.

Watch this news story interview that was NOT aired on your local station, where a respected American doctor (physician/pediatrician) highly recommends parents use hemp vs. psychostimulants such as Ritalin [METHylphenidate] –that’s right, METH to treat children with ADD / ADHD / concentration / hyperactivity symptoms.

UPDATE - July 17, 2010

Class-action Human Rights Tribunal applications are being filed in Ontario by citizens deprived wrongfully of their right to safe and effective cannabis for medicinal purposes because of our defective / ineffective Medicinal Marijuana Access Regulations (MMAR) regime.  If you have been refused access to cannabis by your doctor, can not find a family doctor, or have suffered, and been deprived of medicinal cannabis despite a legitimate ailment or condition, you should complete the form below, join the FaceBook Group "Thyme For Hemp" or visit http://treekings.tk to find out more about this movement.

Depriving citizens of a safe, non-toxic and inexpensive natural alternative to costly toxic chemicals and drugs is depraved, abhorrent, and contrary to the rule of law.  In fact this situation offends the principles of fundamental justice - as has been ruled time and time again by our Canadian courts - whether Mr. Harper et al. like it, or not.

The research is in, and people are waking up angry.  Take part in this movement and fight for our rights to free, safe and effective cannabis medicine.  The FaceBook Group "Thyme For Hemp" already has nearly 2,000 members, grows daily.

Its time to stop the reefer madness, and look at this plant from a factual and scientific perspective.  Doctors are now prescribing cannabis to children for ADD/ADHD because it is effective, non-addictive and non-toxic - unlike so-called 'traditional' chemical cocktails such as Ritalin.

Canada's first International Medical Marijuana Expo in Toronto hopes to attract people suffering from health problems who are "sick and tired of taking pharmaceutical drugs that have adverse side-effects," says the event's organizer. From: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2010/07/16/toronto-marijuana-expo561.html#ixzz0tybLlpxJ

Congratulations to Marco and his associates and supporters for this important and historic event. Cannabis cures cancer, kills pain that morphine won't and is simply the healthiest, most nutritious, and most useful plant known to humans. This has been the case for thousands of years, but only in the last 60 or so has it been wrongfully vilified by selfish corporate interests.

I personally have used cannabis medicinally in order to recover from toxic poisoning [see:
IngersollMouldFoundation], and to regain my weight lost due to the ordeal. My father also now uses it after radiation and chemotherapy nearly killed him.

Kudos again to the organizers and supporters of this movement.  Help us to spread the word: Save the planet - Sow a seed.

Delicious and Healthy Hemp Recipes

Hemp Butter

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cups hemp seed oil

1 lb fresh, unsalted butter

Directions:

Soften butter in a container over-night.

Add hemp seed oil by blending in by hand until hemp oil and butter are mixed.  (A hand blender or whisk works well). Blend (low) untill completely smooth and green is obtained.  Refridgerate, and use as needed.

Hemp butter softens enough to spread at room temp in about 10 minutes.  This spread is delicious and quite nutritious as essential fatty acids counter the saturated nature of butter while adding nutrients and vitamins.  DO NOT fry this butter at high temperatures since the fatty acids diminish over 300F.  Keep all cooking temperatures low and simmer.

Makes: Approx. 1.5 lbs of hemp butter

Prep Time: 5 min

Hemp Nut Bread

hempseed bread picture of loaf

Hemp bread easy to make and the ingredients are basic:

6 cups of flour

2 cups warm water

1 Tablespoon of salt which is optional

1/4 - 3/4 cup hemp nuts (hulled hemp seed)

1 yeast packet

1 tablespoon sugar or honey (optional)

The majority of the time is spent waiting for the dough to rise.

  1. Empty yeast packet into the warm water to dissolve.  Wait about 10 minutes to activate yeast.
  2. Add the first cup of flour and the tablespoon of salt and  stir together.
  3. Add 4.5 more cups of flour plus all the hempseed, and stir until the dough comes into one piece and detaches from the mixing bowl.
  4. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes on a floured surface.  Keep adding the rest of the flour when you need to place more on the kneading surface.
  5. Cover with a damp cloth /towel over bowl, and let the dough rise for about 1-2 hours, until it doubles in size.
  6. When it has doubled, punch it down in towards the bottom of the bowl popping all air bubbles.
  7. Knead dough well (for about 5-6 minutes).  Cut the dough in half.  Shape two dough balls into the shape of a loaf with hangs.
  8. Cover again and let rise for another hour.
  9. Pre-heat the oven to 475, 15 minutes before it rises all the way.  Pay attention to the timing to get good results.
  10. Melt 1/5 of a stick of butter to brush the top of the dough.  It makes it crust taste better, but is optional.   Another option is to brush with sugar/honey water.  An egg white can be used to substitute butter as well.
  11. Slash the top of the loaves 4 times each, Diagonally make two cross slashes.
    • OPTIONAL: Place an empty wide baking tray in the bottom of the oven while it is pre-heating.
    • When it is heated to 475, pour 2-3 cups of water into the tray to make steam.  Be careful!
  12. Bake for 25 minutes. Check after 15. If it looks too dark, lower oven temperature to 450.
  13. Remove from oven.  Let cool.  Enjoy!

Bread Machine Hemp Pizza Dough

Ingredients:

1/2 tsp. granulated garlic
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
1 Tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 cups water
2 Tbsp. hemp oil
4 oz. whole wheat flour
16 oz. bread flour
2 1/2 oz. shelled hemp seed
2 1/4 tsp. yeast

Directions:

(Night before) Weigh all ingredients in bread machine work bowl in order above.  Start bread machine.  Scrape down and work the bowl a few times during the initial mixing to get the ingredients off the sides and incorporated into the dough ball.

Note: You may need to sprinkle in a little extra bread flour if the dough is too wet or add a little water if it is too dry.

Use the "Pizza Dough" setting.  Do not let the dough rise in the bread machine--remove it after the second kneading is finished.

Shape the dough into a ball and put it into a lightly oiled bowl 4-5 quart bowl.  Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

The following day take the dough out of the bowl and use immediately.

Notes:  Fleischmann's Instant Yeast (or Fleischmann's Bread Machine Yeast) works well because it can be mixed with dry ingredients.  For consistent results we use a scale, which is why the ingredients list is by weight.
